Before you can finally have them installed, you must first measure the floor and you must do it accordingly. The last thing you would want is having to over or under-purchase the amount of flooring you may need.

How do you know it’s time to change your flooring?

There can be multiple reasons why your flooring needs a whole transformation. From wear and tear to discolouration or simply because you wish to have a new look for your home! Here are five reasons why it is time for you to change your flooring:

1) Water Damage
2) Allergies
3) Outdated Style
4) Excessive Wear and Tear
5) Discolouration

While these are just some of the general reasons, it differs for everyone else. Replacing or transforming your floors should be one of the biggest priorities for your next renovation to help prevent any health and safety risks. You could also take this as a chance to redecorate your interior to match along!

What type of flooring are you using and why does it make a difference?

How do you measure a floor for replacement?

Before diving into the specific measurements for different types of flooring, let us start easy by going through the fundamentals of how to measure flooring. Now, you might be wondering: What’s so hard about measuring my own existing floor? Actually, different floor types require different measuring methods. For example, measuring a floor for carpet is different when it comes to measuring a floor for wood laminate.

For the most part, the basic rule of measuring the room rectangles and adding them together applies. Measure and jot down the dimensions as you go along. However, for several other floorings, there are some minor changes to consider.

Floor TypeHow To Measure
Carpet Fill: The fill refers to a space needing smaller cuts of carpet. When calculating, be sure to leave a gap for the fill

Roll widths: Most carpets are sold in 12’width rolls. Try to choose a carpet width that goes from wall to wall to have a seamless finish

Patterns: It is vital to match the carpet patterns to avoid a disjointed finishing. Do note to order enough carpet to match up the seams
Vinyl Sheet Flooring Same calculations as carpets but keep in mind that vinyl sheet comes in both 6’ widths and 12’ widths
TileThe larger the tile, expect more wasted material due to the cutting
Wood Plank Flooring Length x Width and sum them together. That amount is then multiplied by 1.05 for an expected 5% of wastage.

As most plank flooring comes in boxes of 20, divide your total square feet by 20 to determine how many boxes you need.
Laminate FlooringLength x Width and sum them together. That amount is then multiplied by 1.05 for an expected 5% of wastage.

How to count the space in your room for your flooring?

How to calculate square metres

Counting the space in your room can be done easily by simply multiplying the length and width of your room or space to give you the total square metres. There are also carpet calculators or flooring cost calculators in Australia you can send your measurements to.

Should flooring run the length or width of a room?

For the most part, flooring must always run the length of a room meaning that it should run on the room’s longest wall. Generally, if your room or home has natural light, it is a rule of thumb to follow the direction of the main source of light or the frequently used entrance.

How much will it cost for your flooring?

How is floor cost calculated?

Depending on the type of floor you opt for in your home, the cost for each type generally varies accordingly. With possibly other renovations in the works, adding calculations on top of it can be nerve-wracking. To make things easier, why not look for a flooring calculator to do the job for you? By using a square metre calculator (also known as an sqm calculator), you would save time and effort having to manually calculate your floor.

Floor Types Estimated Cost
CarpetStarts from $25/m2 to $45/m2 including installation.
Vinyl Sheet Flooring Starts from $24/m2 to $65/m2 including installation.
Tile Starts from $45/m2 to $65/m2 including installation.
Wood Plank Flooring Starts from $75/m2 to $85/m2 including installation.
Laminate Flooring Starts from $20/m2 to $80/m2 including installation.
Timber Flooring Starts from $60/m2 to $180/m2 including installation.

Flooring costs above are only an estimate and vary according to your space. You can search for a flooring cost calculator online and it will easily and quickly calculate whichever floor space measurement you place in! However, do note that different floor types calculate differently. For example, a carpet calculator measurement differs from a tile calculator measurement so do not be alarmed if your figures are different.
