Piles and fibres that handle the chair

Office chair castors are the enemy of tall, soft piles. Choose a low, dense loop or a tight, low twist pile, and the castors roll easily without crushing the carpet or wearing a dish under the desk. Solution dyed nylon is the most resilient synthetic fibre and the one we recommend for a hard working study; wool and wool blend loops are equally tough and feel more refined. A chair mat is still worth using under the desk if you are in the room all day.

Colour, acoustics and the rest of the house

Mid tone greys, blues and natural flecks suit a workspace and hide the marks a desk chair leaves. Because a study is usually a small room off a hallway, the simplest option is to continue the hallway or bedroom carpet into it, provided that carpet is dense enough for the chair. If the office doubles as a guest room, a twist pile gives you the durability for the chair and the softness for guests. Underlay adds sound absorption, which you will notice on video calls.

What is the best carpet for a home office?

A low, dense loop pile or a tight twist in solution dyed nylon or a wool blend. Both stand up to office chair castors and daily use, hide marks well and clean easily. Avoid tall plush piles, which crush under a chair and make it harder to roll.

Can you use an office chair on carpet?

Yes, on the right carpet. A low, dense pile lets castors roll freely and recovers when the chair moves. On a soft, tall pile the chair drags and wears a hollow, so on those carpets use a chair mat. Many people use a mat regardless to protect the carpet under the desk.
