What is the best carpet for a living room?

For most families, a solution dyed nylon or triexta twist pile: both resist stains and wear, and the twist hides footprints. If you want a natural fibre, a wool or wool blend loop is resilient and ages well. Formal lounges that see lighter use can take a softer plush. Colour matters as much as fibre, with mid tones and flecked yarns the most forgiving.

Is carpet or hard flooring better for a living room?

Carpet is warmer, quieter and softer, and it makes a large open plan space feel more comfortable and less echoey. Hard flooring is easier to mop and suits rooms that open straight to outdoor areas. Which carpet hides marks and footprints best?
