Media rooms are the one place where dark carpet is the sensible choice. Charcoal, deep grey, navy and chocolate tones stop light bouncing off the floor onto the screen, and they hide the crumbs that come with movie nights. A dense plush or twist pile gives the softest feel for anyone sitting on the floor, while a dense loop is the choice if the room also serves as a rumpus or games room. The heavier the pile and underlay, the more sound they absorb.

Fibres for snacks, drinks and dimmed lights

Solution dyed nylon and triexta are the fibres to look at. Both shrug off the stains that come with popcorn and soft drink, clean easily and keep their colour, and solution dyed nylon can be cleaned with stronger products if a spill is missed until the lights come up. Wool is a fine choice in a dedicated theatre that sees careful use. Use the filters to narrow the colour to the dark tones and compare the piles side by side.

FAQs

What is the best carpet for a theatre or media room?

A dense, dark carpet in solution dyed nylon or triexta, with a quality underlay. A plush or twist pile gives the softest feel and the most sound absorption; a dense loop is better if the room doubles as a games or rumpus room. Charcoal, deep grey and navy are the most popular tones.

Does carpet improve the sound in a media room?

Yes. A carpeted floor with underlay absorbs reflections and reduces echo, so dialogue is clearer and bass is tighter than in a hard floored room. It also stops footsteps and movement carrying through the rest of the house. Heavier piles and thicker underlay absorb more.

Should media room carpet be dark?

Usually. Dark carpet stops light from the screen reflecting off the floor and washing out the picture, and it hides crumbs and marks. If the room is also used in daylight as a family room, a mid to dark grey is a good compromise.

What carpet is easiest to clean after movie nights?

Yes. Platforms, steps and risers are carpeted as part of the installation, with the carpet fitted tightly over each edge. We measure these in person during the free measure and quote so the right amount of carpet and underlay is ordered.
