Two cut piles, two different looks

Plush and twist are both cut pile carpets, meaning the loops are sheared to leave upright tufts, and that is where the similarity ends. A plush, sometimes sold as a velvet or a cut pile, has lightly twisted yarn cut to an even height for a smooth, dense, luxurious surface. A twist pile uses yarn that is tightly twisted and heat set so each tuft curls slightly, giving a textured surface that hides footprints and vacuum marks and wears harder. Plush for the bedroom and formal lounge; twist for the family room and hallway.

This is the biggest group of carpets we sell. In solution dyed nylon there are Godfrey Hirst’s Silk Indulgence, Supreme Touch, Timeless and Elegant Expression, Feltex’s Lasting Touch, Grand Estate, Knights Ridge and Dream Shadows, and Beaulieu’s Crestia Twist, Kingdom Twist, Harbour View, Maritza, Meadow Song, Opera and Angelica. Every Feltex triexta range is a plush or twist: Freedom, Silhouette, Scenic Rise, Mountain Chalet, Jewel Bay, Absolute Flair, Revive, Inspired Design and Daybreak. Polyester twists from Godfrey Hirst (Highbury Place, Kensington, Modern Appeal and Sixth Avenue), Quest (Autumn Encounter) and Feltex (Orchard Park), and polypropylene piles from Victoria Carpets (Bermo and Helka) and Signature, round out the value end. Fibre sets the price and the performance: triexta and solution dyed nylon for stain resistance, polyester and polypropylene for value.

FAQs

What is the difference between plush and twist pile carpet?

Both are cut piles. Plush uses lightly twisted yarn cut to an even height for a smooth, velvety surface that shows footprints and shading. Twist pile uses tightly twisted, heat set yarn so the tufts curl and the surface looks textured, which hides marks and wears harder. Plush feels more luxurious; twist is the more practical everyday choice.

Does plush carpet show footprints?

Yes. The smooth, even surface of a plush shows footprints, vacuum lines and light and dark shading as the pile leans in different directions. It is part of the look, and most people who choose plush are happy with it, but if it would bother you a twist pile in the same colour gives a similar softness without the tracking.

Which cut pile carpet is best for a busy home?

A twist pile in solution dyed nylon or triexta. The twist hides footprints and resists crushing, and both fibres resist stains and clean easily. Keep the plush for bedrooms and rooms that see lighter use. Our guide to carpet thickness explains how pile weight and underlay affect the feel.
