The hardest working carpet in the house

Stairs and hallways take more footsteps per square metre than any other part of a home, and they take them in the same narrow path every time. A carpet that looks perfect in a bedroom can wear a track down a hallway or go bald on stair nosings within a few years. Here, durability and density come first, and the fibres and constructions we recommend reflect that.

What works on stairs

A dense, low to medium pile is the rule. Loop piles, particularly wool and solution dyed nylon loops, are the hardest wearing choice and keep their texture on the nosing of each tread, where the carpet bends and takes the most wear. Tight twist piles also perform well and feel softer underfoot. Avoid tall, soft plush piles on stairs; they flatten on the nosings and can be slippery in socks. Pattern and stripe can look superb running up a staircase, and we match the pattern at each turn and landing.

Hallways, landings and the join to other rooms

Hallways are the place to use a flecked, heathered or mid tone colour that hides the marks of daily traffic, and a carpet with good soil resistance. Most hallways join bedrooms on one side and a hard floor at the living end, so we plan seams and trims so the carpet runs cleanly from the hallway into each room. Quality underlay matters on stairs as much as anywhere, and a firmer underlay holds the carpet tighter over each step.

FAQs

What is the best carpet for stairs?

A dense loop pile or a tight twist pile in wool, a wool blend or solution dyed nylon. These hold their texture on the nosing of each step and resist the tracking that shows on softer piles. Loop piles are the most hard wearing; twist piles feel softer and hide footprints well. Pair either with a firm underlay.

Can I use plush carpet on stairs?

We would not recommend a tall, soft plush on stairs. It flattens where the carpet bends over the nosing, shows wear quickly and is more slippery than a low, dense pile. A low, dense plush can work on a lightly used staircase, but a loop or twist is the safer choice in every sense.

Is carpet safer than hard flooring on stairs?

Generally, yes. Carpet gives more grip than a smooth timber or hybrid step, cushions a fall and is much quieter. Choose a dense, low pile and have it fitted tightly so there is no movement underfoot; loose or thick carpet on stairs can do the opposite.

Should the hallway carpet match the bedrooms?

It often does, and running one carpet through the hallway and bedrooms gives the cleanest look and the simplest installation. The compromise is that the hallway needs a harder wearing carpet than a bedroom, so many homes choose a durable twist or loop that is comfortable enough for both, or run a loop in the hallway and a matching colour in a softer pile in the bedrooms. How are stairs measured and quoted?

In person. Our consultant measures each tread and riser, the landings and the turns, checks what is under the existing carpet and notes the nosings and any open sides. The quote then covers carpet, underlay and installation. It is free, and it is the only accurate way to price a staircase.
