What is the difference between sheet vinyl and vinyl planks?
Sheet vinyl comes in wide rolls and is welded at the seams, giving a continuous surface with very few joins, which suits hygiene critical and wet environments. Vinyl planks are individual pieces that give a more realistic timber or stone look and can be replaced one at a time. Commercial projects often use both: sheet in wet areas and corridors, planks in reception and office areas.
What is safety flooring?
Safety flooring is sheet vinyl with slip resistant particles built into the wear layer, tested to a P rating (typically P4 or P5) that holds for the life of the floor rather than a surface texture that wears away. It is specified for commercial kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, ramps and anywhere a wet floor is a risk.
Can commercial sheet vinyl be used in a home?
Yes, and it is a sound choice for laundries, bathrooms and busy kitchens. Residential cushioned sheet vinyl is softer underfoot; commercial sheet is harder wearing and available in safety rated versions for wet rooms and accessible bathrooms.
How are the seams joined?
Seams are cut, grooved and heat welded with a matching welding rod, then trimmed flush, which seals the joint against water and dirt. Coved skirtings can be formed from the same sheet for a fully sealed finish in wet areas.
