Choosing laminate flooring for a Perth home

Laminate remains the best value way to put a convincing timber floor through a home. A dense fibreboard core carries a high definition printed design under a hard melamine wear surface, which is why laminate is the most scratch resistant of the timber look floors and the one that photographs closest to real timber, with deep embossed textures and long, wide boards. It installs as a floating floor on a click joint over most existing hard floors.

Jupps stocks laminate from Godfrey Hirst (Vista), Heartridge (Forestbrook and Australian Species) and NFD (Luxe Grain and Kalara), in 8mm and 12mm boards, with oak, Blackbutt and Spotted Gum looks in the colours WA homes ask for. Newer water resistant laminates such as Luxe Grain and Vista carry surface treatments and tight joints that handle everyday spills far better than laminate used to, and warranties now run from 15 to 25 years.

Laminate is at its best in bedrooms, living rooms, studies, hallways and stairs. For laundries and bathrooms we will generally steer you towards a vinyl plank or hybrid instead. FAQs
How water resistant is laminate flooring?
Modern laminates are water resistant and handle everyday household spills when they are cleaned up promptly. Like all hard flooring, no floor should be regarded as completely waterproof, as water can enter through joins, edges and other installation points. For laundries and bathrooms we recommend a vinyl plank or hybrid product instead.
Should I choose 8mm or 12mm laminate?
Both use the same wear surfaces, so durability is similar. 12mm boards feel more solid and quieter underfoot and bridge small subfloor dips better; 8mm is the value choice and sits lower at doorways and transitions. If budget allows and the room is large, 12mm is worth it.
Laminate or hybrid: which should I choose?
Laminate has the harder, more scratch resistant surface and the most realistic textures; hybrid has the water resistant core. Bedrooms, living rooms and studies suit laminate; kitchens and rooms that open to outdoor areas suit hybrid. Many homes use both.
How long does laminate flooring last?
A quality laminate with an AC4 wear rating lasts well over a decade in a busy home, and the ranges we stock carry residential warranties of 15 to 25 years. Felt pads on furniture, door mats at entries and prompt clean up of spills make the biggest difference.
Can laminate be laid over my existing floor?
Yes, over concrete, timber, tiles and most sheet floors, as long as the surface is flat and dry. Carpet must come up. An underlay with a moisture barrier is used on slabs, and we assess this during the free measure.
