Luxury vinyl plank is the quiet achiever of hard flooring. A flexible vinyl plank or tile, between 2mm and 5mm thick, glued directly to the subfloor or loose laid, gives the lowest profile, the softest and quietest feel underfoot and the best performance in rooms that get wet. Wear layer and installation, explained
The specification to look at is the wear layer. A 0.3mm wear layer suits bedrooms and light use; 0.5mm is the heavy domestic standard and what we recommend for family living areas; 0.55mm is commercial grade and carries commercial warranties, which is what Polyflor, Armstrong and the Godfrey Hirst Aquila ranges offer. Installation is either direct stick, for the flattest and most stable result, or loose lay, where the plank’s weight and a friction backing hold it in place with minimal adhesive. FAQs
What is the difference between vinyl plank and hybrid flooring?
Vinyl plank is a flexible plank glued or loose laid directly onto the subfloor, so it sits low, feels soft and quiet and handles wet rooms well. Hybrid has a rigid core and floats over the subfloor on a click joint, which makes it faster to lay over existing floors and more forgiving of small subfloor imperfections. Vinyl plank wins in bathrooms and laundries and for repairability; hybrid wins where you want to float over an existing floor.
Is vinyl plank flooring suitable for bathrooms and laundries?
Yes, it is the hard floor we recommend most often for those rooms. The surface is water resistant and direct stick installation leaves no gap for water to sit in. No floor should be regarded as completely waterproof, as water can enter through joins, edges and other installation points, so correct installation and sealing at wet edges still matter.
What does the wear layer mean?
The wear layer is the clear protective film on top of the printed design. It is measured in millimetres, and the thicker it is, the longer the floor resists scratches, scuffs and wear paths. 0.3mm is light domestic, 0.5mm is heavy domestic, and 0.55mm or more is commercial grade.
Should I choose glue down or loose lay vinyl planks?
Direct stick (glue down) gives the flattest, most permanent floor and is the standard for most homes and all commercial work. Loose lay planks use a heavy friction backing and a small amount of adhesive, which makes them quicker to fit and simpler to lift later; they suit rentals, offices and rooms that may be refitted. Our consultants will recommend the right one for the room.
Can vinyl planks go over concrete or existing tiles?
Both, provided the surface is flat, dry and sound. Concrete slabs are moisture tested and skim coated if needed, and tiled floors are levelled so grout lines do not show through the plank. This preparation is assessed during the free measure.
