About feature and pattern tiles

A feature tile is the one people notice: the patterned laundry floor, the hexagon shower floor, the sculpted wall behind a bath. Because these areas are small, a feature tile is a cheap way to give a room a personality, and the ranges here cover the three ways to do it: printed pattern, shape, and relief.

Printed pattern means encaustic and Moroccan-style looks (MaxGlory Art in eighteen designs, International MTC Vintage, APE Antico Casale). Shape means hexagons, chevrons and herringbone mosaics (Arvex Acqueforti, Panaria Perpetual chevron, Arvex Glazed Herringbone). Relief means the 3D wall tiles (Rondine Lyon 3D, Tiffany 3D, Marazzi Artcraft) that throw shadows across a wall.

Pattern is easy to overdo, so the usual advice is one feature area per room, with plain tiles around it. Bring a photo of the room into your nearest Jupps tile showroom, or send it through and we will suggest a shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

Can patterned tiles be used on the floor?

Most encaustic look ranges are floor rated; 3D relief tiles are wall only. Check the specification table on each range for the slip rating and suitability.

How much feature tile do I need?

Usually far less than you think. A laundry floor is two to four square metres, a shower niche under one. Order ten percent extra for cuts.

What is an encaustic tile?

Originally a cement tile with the pattern pressed in coloured clay. The encaustic look ranges here print those patterns onto porcelain, which is thinner, harder and does not need sealing.

How do I stop a feature tile looking busy?

Keep it to one surface per room and pick the plain tiles around it from the same colour family. A patterned floor with plain walls, or a 3D feature wall with a plain floor.
