About splashback tiles

A kitchen splashback is two to four square metres, sits at eye level, and is the one surface in the kitchen that can carry colour or pattern without overwhelming the room. That makes it the best place to spend a little more per tile. The tile has to cope with heat behind a cooktop and with grease, which any glazed ceramic or porcelain does; the real decision is the look.

The four looks that dominate WA kitchens right now are on this page: subway and kit kat in white or colour, laid stacked or herringbone; zellige for a hand-made, light-catching wall; marble, especially the slab formats that run seamlessly from benchtop to rangehood; and terrazzo or pattern for a kitchen that wants to make a point.

Grout colour changes the look as much as the tile does, so take a sample and hold grout charts against it in the kitchen. Order samples through your nearest Jupps tile showroom, or send us a photo of the kitchen and we will suggest a shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

Can any tile be used as a kitchen splashback?

Any glazed ceramic or porcelain wall or floor tile works behind a cooktop. Check the clearance requirements for gas cooktops with your installer; tiles themselves are not a problem.

How many tiles do I need for a splashback?

Measure the width and height of each section in metres and multiply. Most splashbacks are two to four square metres. Add ten percent for cuts.

Which grout colour for a white subway splashback?

White grout for a clean, seamless look; grey or charcoal to show the tile pattern. Charcoal also hides marks better behind a cooktop.

Can I use marble look slabs as a splashback?

Yes. Slabs such as Marazzi Grande Marble Look and Kerlite run in one piece from bench to rangehood with no grout lines, and are cut to size by the installer.
