About subway and kit kat tiles

Subway tiles are the small rectangular wall tiles, usually 65×200 to 100×300, that have been on kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls for a century. Laid in a brick bond they look classic; stacked straight they look modern; turned on end or laid herringbone they become a feature. Kit kat tiles are the finger-sized version, around 20×140, supplied on mesh sheets so a whole wall goes up quickly.

The range here covers the plain whites (MaxGlory White, Bevelled White Gloss), the hand-glazed looks with movement in the surface (Marazzi Lume, Gleeze, Quintessenza Pigmento, Elephome Petite Bella), coloured and textured ranges (Keradom Twiggy, Florina Ardesia, Marazzi Luz) and the Arvex Ikon Kit Kat family in glazed, unglazed, concave and marble.

Splashbacks and shower walls are small areas, so the tile is a fraction of the job cost and the choice is all about colour and finish. Order a few samples through your nearest Jupps tile showroom, or send us a photo of the kitchen and we will suggest a shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a subway tile?

Classic subway is 75×150 or 100×200, but the ranges here run from 60×240 fingers to 100×300. Kit kat fingers are around 20×140 on 300×300 mesh sheets.

Can subway tiles be used on the floor?

Most subway and kit kat tiles are wall tiles only. Some ranges, such as Frammenti and Glim in the terrazzo look, carry floor ratings; check the specification table on each range.

Which grout colour should I use?

White grout disappears; grey or charcoal grout makes each tile read individually and is more forgiving of marks. Ask for a sample tile and hold grout colour charts against it in the room.

How many square metres does a splashback need?

A typical kitchen splashback is two to four square metres. Order ten percent extra for cuts and breakages.
