About zellige and handmade look tiles

Zellige is the hand-cut, hand-glazed clay tile of Morocco: small squares with uneven edges and a glaze that pools and thins across each piece, so a wall of one colour reads as fifty shades. The porcelain and ceramic versions here keep that variation while laying flat and cleaning easily, which is why zellige has become the splashback and shower-wall tile of the moment.

The closest to the real thing are International MTC Moroccan Zellige and Majorca, with APE Nour and Souk in deeper glazes. Marazzi Confetto is a small glossy square in ten colours, Senio Lapis 3D adds a raised surface, and the hand-glazed subways on the subway page carry the same look in a rectangle.

Because every tile varies, the shade variation rating on the specification table matters: V3 and V4 mean strong variation, which is the point. Order a handful of samples through your nearest Jupps tile showroom, or send us a photo of the space.

Frequently asked questions

What is a zellige tile?

A hand-cut, hand-glazed clay tile from Morocco, usually a small square, with uneven edges and a glaze that varies from piece to piece. The zellige look ranges here reproduce that variation in ceramic or porcelain.

Can zellige look tiles go in a shower?

Yes, on the walls. They are glazed ceramic or porcelain and cope with water like any wall tile. For shower floors use a slip-rated floor tile from the bathroom range.

Why do the tiles look different from each other?

That is the design. Zellige and handmade look ranges carry a V3 or V4 shade variation rating, which means strong differences between tiles. Mix tiles from several boxes when laying.

Which grout suits zellige?

A grout close to the tile colour keeps the focus on the glaze; a contrasting grout emphasises the irregular edges. Ask for a sample and test both.
